A lemonade stand for Camp Mystic families

Spring 2026

Before this organization existed on paper, our learners ran a lemonade stand for families affected by the Camp Mystic tragedy and gave away every dollar they took in. It was their idea and their work.

There was no PTO then. No EIN, no bylaws, no board, no fund with a name. There were children who heard what had happened to families not far from them, decided that they should do something, and did the only thing a child can do with a folding table and an afternoon.

Why we keep telling this story

We repeat it for a reason that has nothing to do with the amount raised. It is one reason leadership and service became one of the PTO's four funds rather than an afterthought.

Service becomes easier to understand when learners have a concrete way to help. A table, supplies, transportation, and an adult nearby can turn an idea into action.

What it changed

When the PTO was formed and had to decide what it would raise money for, this experience helped shape the leadership and service fund. The PTO's role is to help remove practical barriers when learners want to serve — supplies, transportation, materials, and volunteer support.

You can give to learner leadership and service, or read about how the program works now.
